Green Tip of the Week- FREECYCLE

I ran across an interesting article this week promoting a grassroots and volunteer-driven movement of people who are giving new life to old junk by helping people give it away to those who need or want to reuse it- FREE! There are currently 4,864 groups with over 7 million members worldwide.

If you’re interested in exploring this great recycling concept, go to their web site ( www.freecycle.org ), find your community, sign up and begin your bargain shopping. If you’re in the market for a specific item, you can browse the listings and/or tell the community what you are looking for. I believe you need to be a member for at least 2 months before you can post items you want to unload. Generally the rules are that everything must be offered for free and no illegal or adult themed materials are allowed. The most popular items tend to be appliances, furniture and clothing. It is estimated that freecyclers divert approximately 300 tons of free stuff from landfills every day. It really is true that one person’s trash can be another’s treasure. And you can’t beat free!
